Do you want to see the future of your health care? Anyone remember when Wal-Mart first came to their town? How many businesses closed their doors soon after because they simply couldn't compete with Wal-Mart's low prices? Wal-Mart came to my town. At that time there were three grocery stores. One by one they closed (along with many other businesses) until Wal-Mart was the only game in town. Since then the prices have crept up and the selection of goods has decreased. There is no incentive to maintain high standards when there is no competition. The closure of the other grocery stores hit the poor the hardest. Prior to their closing there was a grocery store next to each of our public housing complexes. Residence could simply walk to the store to get their groceries. Now since Wa-Mart is across town in a isolated area those without a car have to pay for a cab to take them to get their groceries. This is a example of the consequence of no competition. I also recognize that this is an example of a free market system at work. However, remove Wal-Mart from the example and replace it with the Federal Government and it is anything but a free market system. Unlike private insurance companies the government doesn't have to worry about making a profit or the bottom line. If they need more money they'll just print it. They don't have to concern themselves with paying property taxes, income taxes, and other similar expenses that private industry does. Currently if you are harmed by the actions of an insurance company you can sue them. Care to think about your odds of winning against the federal government? Anytime you take fair competition out of the market the consumer always suffers.
Not yet convinced the federal government in charge of your health care is risky? Let's look at the outstanding job they have exhibited in managing "the store". There is Amtrak, the Postal Service, Medicare, Social Security, Welfare, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and on and on. I feel better already! Despite repeated warnings about the sub-prime lending practices of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well as other lenders, and the potential consequences, the committee overseeing these institutions simply shrugged it off. Our federal government was also in control of the SEC who's lack of oversights failed to uncover Bernie Maddoff's HUGE ponzy scheme. This despite repeated warnings and tips they received. Their failure to act led to the financial devastation of many people, some of which were driven to suicide.
Still not convinced? Let's look at the crown jewel of government intervention, "Cash for Clunkers". Wow, what a tremendous success! Or is it? Who is this program helping? The Obama Administration along with the Democratic Party would like you to believe they are the party that cares for the poor. This program hurts the poor. Who generally drives "clunkers"? The poor, and since used vehicles are excluded from the program, even though there are plenty of used cars that get good gas mileage, only those who can afford a new car benefit. Now under this program perfectly good used cars are being reduced to huge paper weights and there are less affordable used cars on the market for the less privileged. This will also lead to a reduction in used part available for those "clunkers" that escaped the crushing fate of their brethren. Who else suffers? I recently saw a interview with a mechanic who has been in business for over 30 years. He has seen a huge drop in business as a result of this program. Another victim of this program is one who generally doesn't receive much sympathy and that is the car dealerships participating in this program. They sell you your new car as as you drive away they pray they will be reimbursed by the government. Many have had legitimate claims rejected only to be forced to resubmit to forms over and over again. Some dealerships are owed over 1 million dollars. You heard me right, a million dollars. Sounds like the pinnacle of proficiency to me.
Over the years the republicans and democrats have shown absolute incompetence when it comes to managing anything. I believe they could bankrupt a lemonade stand in the middle of the Sahara Desert. How are they going to pay for the new health care system? Obama says primarily through stopping waste and fraud. Are you kidding me! Look at the amount of waste and fraud we have seen in Medicare, Social Security, Fannie, Freddie, Wall Street, and in our own government. What a wonderful job they have done controlling fraud in those departments. The health care overhaul they propose will dwarf all of the previous examples. Once we go down this path there will be no turning back. Once the private insurance industry is fully decimated and dismantled there will be no bringing them back. We will be locked into a system where we rely on our government to keep us healthy. Anyone think the state of our government is healthy? Universal health care will be simply too big to dismantle. Anyone care to guess who the largest employer in Great Britain is? You guessed it, their government run health care system. It employs 1.4 million people, and is the third largest employer in the world.
I agree something needs to be done to improve our current health care system. This can be done without the draconian approach Washington is proposing. It seems Obama wants to throw out the baby with the bath water and the rubber ducky as well. His language has now shifted from health care reform to insurance reform. He is going to rein in those evil insurance companies that are plagued with greed and only care about profits. That's why they are in business, to make a profit. They aren't and have never claimed to be a non-profit organization. And before you subscribe to the notion that profits are the root of all evil think about your own financial house. Unlike many decades ago when mostly the wealthy traded in the stock market, today many of us have a stake in the success and profitability of these companies. I'll bet that if you researched you 401k and mutual funds many of you will find a link to a insurance company. Your financial future depends on the profitability of companies. Are there abuses in the insurance industry? Yes, and legislation can be drafted to address those abuses Obama is preaching about without radically changing what is the best health care system in the world. Flawed yes, but the best in the world.
